Margaret Howell is a British clothing designer born in Surrey, 1946. Howell began her career making and selling shirts and in 1972 the french Elle magazine commented on her work as, "In her precise and meticulous working methods, Margaret Howell is more a craftsman than an industrialist". Jack Nicholson can be seen wearing one of her corduroy jackets in the classic film 'The Shining' and Howell has also worked with accredited photographers including Bruce Weber, Koto Bolofo and Alesdair McLellan.
What can be noted about Margaret Howell's style of work are relaxed silhouettes, functional details and rough, practical fabrics. Howell appreciates good quality tailoring and this can be seen through her clothing. She is inspired by nature and the feel of fabrics created by skilled artisans, "for example the feel of hand-woven Harris tweed and the irregular slum of Irish Linen."
